As is known, TPE and TPU are both thermoplastic materials which have the same feature of rubber elasticity. It might be a little tricky to distinguish the TPE and TPU, but really? Why not take a look at the following aspects.
1. Hardness
In general, the hardness of TPE ranges from ShoreA Scale 0 ~ 100 while that of TPU is usually Shore60A ~ Shore70D. That said, TPU has higher hardness than TPE.
2. Combustion Distinction
When burning, TPE gives away less smoke and some kind of faint aroma. On the other hand, the smell of TPU is more irritative, and there is also a slight explosion.
3. Touch Difference
Many over-molded products like wheels are made of TPE or TPU. The main difference between TPE and TPU is the softness. TPE and its products have more delicate and softer touch, while its friction performance is weaker.
4. Shrinkage difference
The shrinkage percentage of TPE is around 1.2-3% while it is 0.8-1.8% of the TPU.
